Phenomenology of Place

Based on the article by Christian Norburg-Shulz, “Phenomenology of place” described as how natural and constructed environments, works together as a set of complex and “concrete phenomena”, which affect human perceptions, experiences, and emotions. “Concrete phenomena”, describe as what content of existing selected site “given” to us, can be human, nature environment and etc. Preferably, “place” is actually more than just an abstract location of site or it’s immediate context. In fact, it represent as “physical thing”, to determine environmental factor, or essence of a place.

As a brief, the project is mainly focus on the theme of "adaptive re-use". Existing building in our site which was build in 1956, is located in Jalan Sungai Besi and Lok Yew. The challenge of designing this building is injecting new program by remaining the certain elements such as exterior facade, spiral staircase, columns and beamsOne part of the existing building can be demolished completely as the other part remains. It refers to the process of reusing an old site or building for a purpose other than which it was built or designed for. Adaptive re-use is seen by many as a key factor in land conservation and the reduction of urban sprawl. I focused on the sense of belonging in terms of structure, tectonic, materials and facade treatment for the building by giving strength to the building.

The consideration is the living lifestyle of the local people and tenant and their relationship within the building and also within the surrounding site. From the site analysis, currently the building is rented out to the migrant people, local people and below is workshop and shop lots rental. Most of the place is being occupied by tenant. The building is surrounded by old building as well and new commercial building has started to move into the site. Along the highway causing busy daily life for the vehicles. Besides drugs being the main issue of the site, i also analyse the cleanliness of the area is quite unhygienic which made me do further research which came to my notice that "mycelium" (mushroom fungi), something that can change the entire environment.

To Retain the memories of the user towards the old building, and to insert new programme. By retaining the structure, the existing façade towards north east & north west which gives respect to the old building in terms of preservation and culture. I proposed “community projects hub”

Site is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by commercial, industrial, and educational and those main factors are helpful to promote or make my programme work. My project involves the function of community into one hybrid activities derived from program outside the building which is commercial, education and industrial.

When fusing together the space with the current setting, the organisation of space are strategically designed. The activities done are designed to infuse spaces together and courtyard as the focal point in order to get the idea of my designed program. The system of clean, straightforward circulatory element is implanted in order to link to the main function. The circulation system plays a strategic role to differentiate commercial, co working and residential studios in three different floors.

With the study of phenomenology strategy, a transitioning space are purposely created to allow users to have a visual connection to the courtyard and spark adventurous sense in the space present.

Preserving the traditional elements, and co working together with mycelium (fungi material), the advantage in working with this material because it is affordable, availability of resource, durable and it withstand weathers. With a positive character of mycelium, it is not only for the physical of the building, but for the community, such as, post relief disasters, renovation purpose, school projects and low income projects. The origin of the building's material are mainly brick and concrete, and to cooperate materials with the structure, eco friendly mycelium will be a suitable material to incoperate together with the existing structure. Spaces propose in design, it translates a positive impact to users how fungi serves a better alternative for the environment and users.

“A place is therefore a qualitative, “total” phenomenon, which we cannot reduce to any of its properties, such as spatial relationships, without losing its concrete nature out
of sight,” Christian Norburg-Shulz

From my project , I can categories my design as place-based , instead of designing a space for artist , I think artist more need is the place , a place of space to let them feel and find their inspiration . In my view , architecture is design for human need , as the same time , there were also need to consider the place cultural and element , so that we can design the architecture that belonging the place ,not just designing the building that can place anywhere.

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
