PHENOMEONOLOGY OF PLACE
“Phenomenology of place” is actually more
than just an abstract location of site or it’s immediate context. In fact, it
represent as “physical thing”, to determine environmental factor, or essence of
a place. Phenomenology in Architecture relates
to your sensory reaction to built space. Or more simply how does the building
or space make you feel.
Based on the article
by Christian Norburg-Shulz, “Phenomenology of place” described “as
how natural and constructed environments, works together as a set of complex
and “concrete phenomena”, which affect human perceptions, experiences, and
emotions. “Concrete phenomena”, describe as what content of existing selected
site “given” to us, can be human, nature environment and etc.
From traditional architecture. Through post -
modern architecture to now contemporary architecture, concept of phenomenology of
place is heavily consider in every pre-stage of design a building in term of organization, contextual, materiality,
programmatic and circulation. In result to create a unique experience
of the phenomena of space. Designing an experience is a unique responsibility
of an architect.
Based
on my current design project, I would like to discuss the characteristic of the
project in regards of it having a “phenomenology of place” and how does my work
illustrate a sense of being “place-based” instead of placelessness
“…..
a place is given as such a character or atmosphere. A place is therefore a
qualitative…’- Christian Norberg- schulz
As a brief given, our task is to
adaptive re-use. Existing building in our site, which is located in jalan
sungai besi and lok yew. One part of the existing building can be demolished
completely as the other part remains. It refers to the process of reusing an
old site or building for a purpose other than which it was built or designed
for. Adaptive re-use is seen by many as a key factor in land conservation and
the reduction of urban sprawl. I focused on the sense of belonging in terms of
structure, tectonic, materials and facade treatment for the building. In order
to create a “spirit” and “character” of the site. I tried to emphasis on
organization, spatial geometry, proximity, linear, boundaries of site and
existing building.
First consideration is the
living lifestyle of the locals/tenant and their relationship with building. From
the site analysis, currently the building is rented out to the migrant people,
local people and below is workshop and shop lots rental. Most of the place is
being occupied by tenant. The building is surrounded by old building as well
and new commercial building has started to move into the site. Along the
highway causing busy daily life for the vehicles.
To Retain
the memories of the user towards the old building, and to insert new programme.
Best move is to retain the the structure, the existing façade towards north
east & north west. Which gives respect to the old building in terms of
preservation and culture. I proposed “creative hub”. Since
the site is located in the middle of city, surrounded by commercial,
industrial, educational, etc. Character
of locals as the other consideration in my design, which locals are friendly, but
there is too less activities that can be seen which cause less communication
among each other. To solve the issues, I used back the opportunity to demolish
the one part of building, now it gives a open courtyard in the middle, being
the focal point for all zones in my building. Which can be used as to
communicate and as well networking.
In order to fuse
the internal spaces of the building with the
space of the current setting, the organisation of the space is
derived as a fundamental design strategy. All the
programmes are strategically designed from one another and positioned
precisely to focus on the courtyad. To complete the whole spatial
organisation of the building, the system of meandering circulatory
elements is implanted in order to link all the main functions together.
The circulation system also plays
a strategic role in leading
the residential studio unit and outsider
to traverse in-between spaces,
in which the spatial between inside and outside emerges.

As a consequence of phenomenology
strategy, series of long transition space are organized and created intentionally to allow users
physically have visual connection to the courtyard, and mentally emerge an
adventurous sense to the spaces. In a result to highly improve
the spatial quality of the space in both mentally and physically.
The project are renovated and rehabitated the old 1956 building and now turned to creative hubs. Remaining
of valuable traditional elements and associated with the “ideal of plasticity” the modern material to harmonize the new function of the building. Combined of principle of
continuity with modern technique of handling material, provided a new aesthetic and quality
spaces arrangement to the building. Jalan sungai besi, is under developing area where origin building here are mostly built with concrete and brick. In order to continue the language of the building, raw material such as brick and timber will be the first options in this project. To enhance the quality of materials use, I decided to add in new material such as concrete, steel and glass. Old and New material associated with modern construction method to make the
structure more efficient and commodious. For instances, using the raw concrete brick as a feature
wall inside the courtyard.
In conclusion, the design
characteristics is regards of illustrate a sense of being “place-based”. Based on
the site context and environment factors created the dynamic of human perception
of the individual and the community is influence by the design. Architecture is
designed to serve the needs of human activity; therefore creates a relationship
between human sense and the building to transform emotion and perception. Design
should foremost consider sensory details when integrating a collaborative program.
