Phenomenology of Place

Phenomenology of Place

Phenomenology in architecture can be understood as an aspect of philosophy researching into the experience of built space, and as shorthand for architectural phenomenology, a historical architectural movement.

This project focus on how we analyze and interpret the site's cultural and environmental significance, also known as "adaptive reuse". To reuse the existing building or site surrounding, in order to design a characteristic and relationship between the existing building with the newly proposed design.

“Preservation is a reproduction to allow later generations to understand history.” - Rem Koolhaas.

THE PROJECT

The site located near Jalan Loke Yew highway. The surrounding building are mostly 1950s-1980s style architecture . The objective of this project is to transfer previously learned skill from Project 1 and Project 2. to increase and attract communities into the surrounding site.

Design development

My proposal for the site is "Youth Learning Center" , where i focus on finding identity withing the city, and learning bout the surrounding youth culture. This is because there are High School, elementary school as well as University (HELP University) nearby.

I look more into depth at how my building is a appropriate space within the city and by analyzing their behavior. Through research into various culture of youth and activity that youth involved in and around the city, my aim is youth can reconnect to their surroundings thus giving youngster much sense of place and identity within their ever changing city.

The Threat
There are many issue that youth face today such as: safe sex, bully, gang, crime, drugs and the worst to our future is unemployment and lack of skills.

Therefore as an architectural student to design an architectural response to youth is not easy. Each and every youth have different set of values, understanding and need. For this reason i focused my research on activities that youth able to make use of it in the future.

The Floor Plan

The Youth Center aims to be a space within the city that youngsters can associate with and express themselves through.

This is the ground floor plan. The ground floor has a courtyard garden that i wish to utilize to facilitate the form of entrance and movement across the site. The ground floor is largely made up of the courtyard garden which allows spaces for various activities, however some area are more specifically for other activities like performance art, study, and street art.

The activities located ground floor are cooking studio, health and beauty studio and art/craft/fashion studio where youth able to express themselves to learn new skill and able to sell to the community surrounding the city.

On the 1st floor is the "Chill zone' where there is a open sky deck where youth is able to do different kind of activities, and also there is performance art studio where they can practice and learn dances and so on. There is also a Play room where this comprises of pool tables, arcade game and resting area.

On the Top floor there is a open deck with sitting areas, and also a film/multimedia studio for youth to compose songs and film, where they can explore their creativity.

CONCLUSION

There are many youth center in and around, providing youth with reproductive health service, although is important but what youth need is freedom and different ways to express themselves. I want to include a way which youth feel about the places, senses and to express, like a bond between a person and the environment, a place where not only to have fun but a place to create memory.

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
