From the previous article, we had discussed that context
actually is everything. It included physical, economic, social and political
issue so that architects must take considered about it during the design
process. From the article today, we have to discuss about my current design
project in Studio 4.
Phenomenology in architecture can be defined as a situation
of philosophy researching into the experience of built space, and as shorthand for architectural
phenomenology, a historical architectural movement.
Phenomenology is the concept in architecture that should happen in every
pre-stage of designing a building in term of organization, contextual,
materiality, programmatic and circulation. In contrast, architectural
phenomenology is a movement within architecture beginning in the 1950s,
reaching its apogee in the late 1970s and 1980s, and continuing until today.
About the site
The site is located at Jalan Loke Yew surrounded by many
boring activities and also very nearby the highway. Aim of this project is to challenge
us to create insightful and innovative design to preserve a 1956’s building
into a public building with co-working space, commercial spaces and
residential-studio that engage with the existing and future communities.

Existing ground floor plan. |
This project is based on adaptive reuse of 1956’s building
and some limitation is given:
- - Existing total build-up area 1200m2 but we required to reduce to total build-up area 600m2.
- - Existing columns, beams and staircase have to remain.
- - Existing North-East and North-West façade have to remain about 80%.

later generations to understand history.” - Rem Koolhaas.
Internal courtyard
The building has a courtyard in the middle.
This idea is same like old Chinese architecture. People will have activities in
the space.
Design development
The site has less public places where people around there can
go. My purpose of this project is to give the people there having more public
spaces to go and would not spoil the history of the building. Besides that, I also plan to reduce use of artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation in my building.

Second Floor Plan
I focused more on adult in my second floor place because i want all the people from different age stages feel interesting and willing to use the building. Activities included fitness studio and meeting room.

Double volume cafe. |
Using glass in the cafe can provided more natural light and can see more views. I used wire mesh double facade full of climbing plants so that it can allow more ventilation enter. I also provided balcony to allow people can walk out to look at the view in internal courtyard.

Conclusion
In my opinion, we have to study about the relationship of the space so that we can provide more perfect design to users. I also think that my building is a 'place-based' building because all my ideas have to arranged, planned and designed based on the context surrounding the site. But this design process is still under process and still have a lots of thing to be modified.
