FORM
The word form come
in mind with types of shape or configuration of a building. Form and its
opposite, space, constitute primary elements of architecture. It is one of the
most debated subjects in contemporary architectural discourse.
‘may refer to shape, structure, or appearance: custom or
conduct; a document or outline; linguistics; or fitness or health’ by Adrian forty
in the philosophical text.
Form follows Function- Louis sullivan
FUNCTION
Functionalism is the principle that architects should
design a building based on the purpose of that building. This statement is less
self evident than it first appears, and is a matter of confusion and controversy
within the profession, particularly in regard to modern architecture.
“Concept differentiate architecture from mere building…..
a bicycle shed with a concept is architecture a cathedral without one is just a
building” – Bernad Tschumi
The relationship between form and function in
architecture can be interpreted in a way that the functionality of the
architecture building is designed initially to serve a purpose which focuses on
the use and generate democratic space and interaction rather than an asthetical
satisfaction. The new uses, material and technology surely can change the
relationship between them. In this age of information and transformation, we
have discovered a lot new materials and technologies.
It is the outer skin of a building what usually defines
its form. Such skin has always has many function. With new materials and
technologies, these function of the skin are ever expanding and we may even
reach the point when the inside of the building can concentrate solely on its
primary function without having to take into account any needs.
Form and function are integrated in the context of the
information age and society where function and the events of technology would
determine the built form of a building. Building form should try to reflect the
identity of a place regardless of
function or even technology for that matter.
Renovation
is an
effective way to revive the function of a building. The use of efficiency which
is primarily determined by its layout(FORM). However, in practice renovate
buildings based on their personal subjective perception of how occupants use
the building instead of systematically analyzing their use behaviors. Case study
GOLD HALL RESIDENCE by Stephen Philips architects giving an facelift to an
otherwise aged 1960s Malibu canyon track home. Stephen Philips architects(SPARCHS)
creates a sparkling contemporary gem.
The architect took on the challenge to
purchase an all wood sided shed roof modern house and transform into something
original and beautiful. Philips most notably created two story wrap around
balcony and deck that directed arriving guest to the front of the house. The architect has created a form for human needs. Balcony and
deck were some of the important addition on this design has make the important
phase of this new significance. The exterior
surface with a combination of cement board and metal panels alongside exterior
cement plaster (stucco) to ensure a contemporary new look.
Phillips’s angular-roof entry becomes the central
organizational figure within the overall design. It brings visitors up from the garden to the
living area, and uses glass extensively, shaded under a series of shifted and
folded roof and wall planes that extend out to the canyon while framing distant
mountain views.
After conversion, tis became a relaxing contemporary
house with all views clear out to the mountains. What was formerly a lackluster
wood developer track house becoming a sparkling jewel through only a few
carefully designed elements that add bold dynamism alongside much needed value
and protection to this unique and contemporary Malibu canyon home.
Adaptive re-use
Is the process of changing a building FUNCTION to accommodate
the changing needs of its users. Preserving a building and its function may be
acceptable under circumstances relating to extraordinary historical events, but
not for the vast majority existing structure. Adaptive reuse revise the
function of a building while preserving the integrity of a architectural form. Case
study is CHAPEL ON THE HILL by evolution design. this church with very best walking area of the
beautiful north pennines, just a short walk from the famous high force
waterfall, this stunning chapel conversion with historic building fabric and
modern interior design is a real jewel. In 2015 this building has changed to
become a human living house.
In this project, buildings displayed their functional and
structural elements to merge with its own form. However, the initial brief was
to provide 3 guest bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining area and a living room
on the ground floor. It was soon clear it would reduce the space, therefore
mezzanine floor was proposed. Architecture not alone as form following
function, but conceived as space enclosed. The enclosed space functioning
itself might now be seen as the reality of the building
After the reconstruction project, it was to bring this
unique property back to life and to enable visitors to appreciate the history
and local architecture while providing a beautiful environment to explore the
countryside. Form follows function, we can understand from here; function is
more significant than form.
In my opinion, form and function are very important. Two of
this feature cannot be separated. A building should not just based on the
functionality instead it should merge with humanism, form and purpose
respectively to make it as a whole together. Without any of it, the value of
architecture would not be meaningful and mis- functioning. From these two
contemporary building form and function must be treated equally with usefulness
