Contextual
and architecture, In another scientific words that’s more close to us. We known
it as site analysis and site context. Which is a preliminary phase of
architectural and urban design processes dedicated to the study of climatic, geographical,
historical, legal and infrastructural context of a specific site. But actually
it is more than that.
What is
the role of context in architecture today? Is context predominantly a physical
issue, social, economic, or political issue; some combination of these? The question
that arise when exploring this relationship are more than simply about finding
the proper placements and site issue within architectural space to “accommodate”
a community and their behaviors within it.
On this topics,
context and architecture is more mentions about the environment surrounding use
with building, which there are different aspects. The environment is very
important, is part of our language of built buildings, like for examples, site,
topography, vegetation, most important our neighbor needed to be considerate. These
are physical studies on the environment, on the other hand the non-physical
aspects. The non-physical which can be more classified into few group such as
the climate change, social, economic and a lot base on identified from site
analysis information.
Context is
external elements of the building, either physical and non physical. Road, buildings and land contour are example
for physical elements while non physical elements are weather condition, local
culture, etc. Thus, the context are influencing contemporary architecture
design. Design for a house in four seasons countries for example is different
than the design in tropical countries. Understand the local context are
important for designers to produce a good building design. The context
determines the architectural style, building material selection and site
layout, which is very important in creating an effective design. All these
promote continuity between the building and local circumstances.

Architecture In context is neither a cursory
attention nor a radical innovation, it is a strong and eloquent visual
relationship to the surrounding. Individual building is always seen first as a
part of the whole. Creating places and spaces that enrich the lives of the
people who use them is the foundation of architects work. Creating places and
space that enrich the lives of the people who use them is the foundation of
architects work. Every building can and should engage in a dialog with the history,
belief and needs of a particular place and time. Identification of place lies
as a generative core of architecture. Place is to architecture as a meaning is
to language, recognition, memory, choice, sharing with others, the acquisition
of significance; all these contributes to the process of architecture.
Case study
SOUTHERN ISLAND OF CREATIVITY /
CHENGDU DESIGN RESEARCH CENTER
“Southern island of creativity”
is the start up phase land of the eastern new town which endeavors to
develop creative industry future Chengdu, china.
The huge
fall of space density between the inner part and surrounding emphasizes the
morphology of an “urban island”.
The edge of the island which
forms the border and splits the whole districts into high and low density
areas. The humanized consideration of the annex of the “edge” buildings. The chain
of vitality goes through the whole island. The diverse characteristics and
space identities of each part of this ‘chain’ are considered based upon the
specific location, function, transportation system and topography including the
urban lobby, sky street and network of creativity.
The urban
island is the central part of the island which acts as the key node of central
axis that connects the other two islands. It also includes a large open space
for public on the ground and a transportation stop and interchange underneath with
central tall buildings for international companies of creativity.
Different layers of the ‘sky
street’ are containers for diverse activities such as shopping, refreshments,
art exhibition and driving based upon the topography. Rather than creating big
buildings such as museum, which is usual in many Chinese cities. We propose to
introduce a sequence and network of creativity industry facilities which make
up the central museum, portal museum, block facilities, and the small. In this “island”.
I can foresee the sensation of freedom and harmony between architecture,
context and humanity. Just like radiant city by le Corbusier.
“The keystone of the theory behind this city (Radiant City) is the
liberty of the individual.”

The example
of architect who profound the idea of sustainable design is ken yaeng. He is
one of the leaders in green architecture movement, especially for green
skyscraper.

Singapore’s
26 storey EDITT TOWER, designed by architects T R Hamzah & Yeang, is being
created to rehabilitate an urban, non organic site, classified as ‘zero culture’
where the natural ecosystem has been completely devastated. Beside meeting their
client practical requirement for a tower for use as retail, exhibition and
auditorium use, the design is very much ecological design.
The unique
feature of this scheme is the well planted facades and vegetated terraces that
surround the building. The design approach enables ecological succession to
take place and to balance the existent inorganic nature of the site. The vegetation
areas are designed to be continuous and to ramp upwards from the ground to the
uppermost floor. Importantly the planting of the towers uses indigenous plants
so as not to complete with the existing species of the locality.

The ramp are used to create a continuous
spatial flow from street level to the floors of the city’s high rise tower and
high-level bridge – linkages are added to connect to neighbouring building for greater
urban-connectivity. The tower’s green credential continue inside the tower with
ecological features including water self-sufficiency through
rainwater-collection and grey-water reuse at over 55% and the design optimizes recovery
and recycling of sewage waste through the creation of compost and bio-gas fuel.
The EDITT tower will also achieve almost 40% energy self-sufficiency through a
system of solar panels.

"All the various sporting activities,
take place directly outside people’s homes, in the midst of parks—trees, lawns,
lakes. The city is entirely green; it is a Green City. Not one inhabitant
occupies a room without sunlight; everyone looks out on trees and sky."
state by Le Corbusier
From the
case study we can see that categories of the human pathway and car road. The landscape
of this building is not separated. Not like building context belong to
building, road context belong to road. They are combined together with interior
human walkway. They present the strong context and diversity of use between
building and landscape. Beside that, the building is following the local need
weather and climate to design with.
In my opinion, Architecture context are more in combination of physical issue, social economic and culture. Architecture should consider these kind of issues to design the building, with consider of these. the building will more presented the place and need of human and architect should consider about the economic building.
