BODY & BUILDING

BODY & BUILDING

There is a close relationship between human body and buildings, be it a metaphor or some abstractions, like in the text De Architectura by Marcus Vitruvius said that, Buildings should be proportioned symmetrically as per human body. However, it would be make sense of the building to be a direct response to the body. This means that the sizing of it should be based on the anthropometric and ergonomics of human activities. In response, this would turn those studies of data to be translates into height, area, width, area and etc. to plan a space.

“PROPORTION IS A CORRESPONDENCE AMONG THE MEASURES OF MEMBERS OF AN ENTIRE WORK”, Marcus Vitruvius

Marcus Vitruvius stated that human body is designed by nature and that every part of it should has its own meaning. In architecture, such as to design is to establish the anthropometric distance between the human body and tactile objects, to orientate the proxemics interactions between one body and another, and to articulate something of the Divine Proportion of the Human Body.

As you can see in Le Corbusier’s text, he stressed on anthropometric studies which is measurement of human body regarding on different gesture that gives interaction or movement within a building. Architecture and human body also come into contact more concrete way at an ergonomic level. He cited that, the relationship between size, form and        movement are what essentially characterize the human scale, and form an ideal basis for universal standardization.

“ARCHITECTURE MUST BE A THING TO THE BODY, A THING OF SUBSTANCE AS WELL AS OF THE SPIRIT
AND OF THE BRAIN”, Le Corbusier

I’ve concluded that mostly building are metaphor of human body in architecture nowadays in Malaysia or any other country in the world. Structure of the human body, human body parts even small cell in human body were taking in as design intention or inspiration to apply and put in their design. As the main purpose of building is created to gives human shelter. Architecture must not be separated from human bodies. Human bodies are a great thing to be explored and studied by architect as it changes how a building should be interact. Human anthropometric studies are an endless studies as human behaviour changes physically and mentally, beside different gender, age, races and religion does matter the whole things.

CASE STUDY
FINAL WOODEN HOUSE    by Sou Fujimoto

In Japan, a house is made up of timber wood, which is called final wooden house. It is an experimentation to human size comfortable space in it. The architect also need to study human scale to move around stair steps, floor, with a comfortable height of 150mm, when double it will become a bench and triple become tables, and so on. The ideas of this materials to arrange of timbers logs creates space that not define by the function or rooms to maximize the use of every corner of the house, and the all measurement are considered per human scale and sizes brings comfortless to the people inside.

As a conclusion, what I’ve learnt base on the information above, I understand that the building be direct response to human body. With the right size, height, width, and length, then only bring out the good quality in it, can be achieved and brings good architecture. In my opinion, it is very important before start up the design building, need to consider the human sizes to come out the space.

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
