The Relationship
Relationship between architecture and human body clearly has a long history. What is the connection between them? Architecture is defined by its users. The relationship between them is closely connected to each other to design a building and has been discussed by architects since long time ago. It reached deep into why those activities show in the first place, as it calls on the experiential characteristics and qualities that intense feeling when the two combine. The relation of human beings to surroundings is an important part of their status in new era. Therefore, the relationship of human and architecture could be defined as soft and unsettled area.Metaphor of Human Body
Metaphor are the cognitive tools which we can understand
ourselves and the world. One of the primary metaphor resources is human body. Human
body as metaphor for functional architecture addressed the linguistic re-framing
of human body and its relation to architecture in modern culture.
By researching the metaphor of body and its relation to
architecture, we can collect pragmatic, semantic and syntactic philosophy as
linguistic idea, distinguishing the relationships of the physical form and the
conceptual space of structure.
We can see the changes in the metaphorical structuring of
architectural summary by reading the symbolism. The metaphorical use of human
body and its parts show not only currents or hidden considerations but also the
structure and culture of modern society.
"Proportion is a correspondence among the measures of members of an entire work" - Vitruvius
The Vitruvian Man is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci completed in 1490. This drawing is based on the connection of perfect human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. He described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the classical order of architecture. He also determined that the body should be eight heads high and taking human body as reference to draw a circle and a square around it some areas. Human body is designed by nature; every part of the body has its own characteristic. Therefore, different country has its own proportion to provide a comfortable place for users. The Taichung Metropolitan Opera House
The structure main features curvilinear windows as well as relevant
section that seem to fold into the otherwise rectangular volume. In the interior,
cave-like halls, rooms and stairwells echo the insides of a human body with
white concrete walls and red carpeting serving to further drive home the
connection.
“I aimed to create the architecture of this opera house in such a way that the inside and outside are continuous in a like manner to how bodies are connected to nature through organs such as the mouth, nose, and ears.” Said Toyo Ito.
Toyo Ito design this opera house is inspired by the human
body. This continuous design is suggested by the style which bodies are
connected to nature through sensory organs. The openings of the exterior
represent the building’s eyes, mouth, nose and ears.
Turning Torso
Turning Torso is a residential skyscraper in Sweden and the
tallest building in Scandinavia. The project is designed by Spanish architect,
structural engineer, sculptor and painter Santiago Calatrava and officially opened
in 27 August 2005. It is considered as the first twisted skyscraper in the
world.
Turning Torso is based on a sculpture by Calatrava, called
Twisting Torso, which is a white marble piece based on the form of a twisting
human being. He abstracted the form of human movement into a stack of cubes set
around a steel support to produce a spiral. This is a solid motionless building
constructed in nine segments of five-story pentagons that twist relative to
each other as it rises; the topmost segment is twisted 90 degrees clockwise
with respect to the ground floor. Each floor has an irregular pentagonal shape
rotating around the vertical core, which supported by exterior steel framework.
Conclusion
Most of the buildings are designed by calculation and
consideration nowadays. For me, I think building is metaphor to the human body.
Buildings are designed according proportion of human body to suited the
activities occurred in the building.
“Architecture must be a thing of the body, a thing of
substance as well as of the spirit and of the brain.” Said Le Corbusier.
Therefore, human body considered as one of the most complicated
thing on earth. It should always use as reference and proportion to create a
perfect anthropometry.
