BODY & BUILDING
Architecture
today, besides of materiality, Functionalism, etc. human body is one of the
crucial element that necessary to be consider in a building in terms of space.
Organization and proportion of the building. Building and body, whenever we
enter a building with a door, rooms, and more. It is well fit to human
anthropometry. Part of proportion symmetrically as a human body to a building
wrote by Marcus Vitruvius, design based on the symmetry with measurement of
length connect with building.
“Proportion is a correspondence among the
measure of members of an entire work”-
Marcus Vitruvius
Relationship
between building and body in contemporary architecture is designing a building
according to human figure which is suitable. It develops deep into why these
behaviors manifest in the first place, as it calls upon the experiential
characteristics and qualities that spark when the two unite – impacting not
only occupant behavior through the body, but also impacting occupant
intellectually, emotionally, physiologically and even spiritually through body
as well. The proportion of human body is important consideration when designing
architecture. Human bodies such as size, age, race, etc.
Using
the space are the people, movement and daily activities in space. Appear that
proportionate and symmetry are the parts and scale to architecture building.
These are mentioned from Vitruvius, to create a space are overly scaled, huge
area to make a person felt very small, contrast to human figure in big space.
The modular man was envisioned from le Corbusier, is represent or standardize
measurement architecture based on the human figure. Even though he takes
initiatives to control with human body length and scale, from his ideas to
current generation to use modular man as part to proceed to ideas and to
generate details. Designing a building according to human figure which is
suitable.
Human body is designed by
nature. It is symmetry and have own proportion and each proportion of human
have own meaning. Such as the open hand from wrist to the tip of the middle
finger is just the same. In architecture, the building should have its own
proportion which refers to human body.
CASE STUDY
This case study is about final wooden
house. They had developed a skill into a compact space, so compact that it
accommodates people and family in a land between buildings and many more. An
experimentation to human size comfortable space and stapes around it. The
architect also need to study human scale to move around stairs, floors with a
comfortable height of 150mm, when double it will become a bench and triple
become tables and so on. The ideas of this materials to arrange of timbers logs
creates space that not define by the
function or rooms to maximize the use of every corner of the house and all the
measurement are considered per human scale and sizes brings comfort to the
people inside. All the measurement are considered according to human
anthropometrics.
Case study
This six story complex comprises three theatres of varying
capacities, as well as rehearsal spaces and a restaurant. This building acts
like a perfect stage for a opera to happens. The building is enough as height,
width, length and also the environment quality is well considered also.
Toyo ito aimed to create the architecture of this opera house in
such a way that the inside and outside are continuous in a like manner to how
bodies are connected to nature through organs such as the mouth, nose, and
ears.
We can see that building can be designed in such a way that it
reflects human complicated movement and body structure. He study human body and
trying to recreate it in a form of architecture.
CASE STUDY
Another case study is the Marilyn
Monroe Building, a residential condominiums twin tower skyscraper complex in Canada
by burka architects, MAD studio. They officially called as ABSOLUTE TOWER. The building
look like entire bodies. The building in honor of the former movie sta r famous
buxom shape. Which I think the buildings are metaphor of the body, where its
adopted the human body into the structure.
In my opinion, building nowadays are the combination of both
metaphors of the body and direct responses to the body. The function of
building is to provide a comfortable and specific space follow by the diversity
of users and the specific program. In the same time, the aesthetic value and
safety shall integrate together as well. Structure of human body, human body
parts even human cells were taking in as design intention or inspiration to
apply and adopt in their design. Human anthropometric studies is an endless
studies as human behavior changes physically and mentally, beside different
gender, age, races and religion.
