’Form’
is generally used to reference physical properties of objects. Particulars are
objects of sight but not of information, while the forms are the objects of
information but not of sight. ‘Function’ of an object or system is related to
the environment in which it operates. Function of a building is that which it
alone or it better than everything else can go through.
FORM
How the
form and function can affect the lifespan of an architectural work? To reach a
sustainable built environment, it is very important to guarantee that existing
building keep on to work efficiently throughout their lifespan. The lifespan of
form of a building can be affect by many things such as climate change and
materials used. There may be a collapse as a result of storm, snow or sunlight
that can be reduced the building lifespan. The form of a building with good
drainage, shading device and ventilation can make the lifespan of building
become longer. Materials used also can affect the lifespan because different
types of material having its own characteristics. For example, lifespan of
ceramic tiles is longer than timber.
Form of
building can be renovation by maintenance. Building maintenance is the
combination of technical and control actions to make sure the items and
elements of a building in a proper standard to carry out its function. During
the maintenance, it will keep the physical characteristics of a building and
its services. Target of maintenance is to extend the lifespan of a building and
maximize the aesthetics and economic values of a building.
FUNCTION
This is
the basic characteristics of a building which is closely linked to their
durability. For example, in the case of monumental building, the lifespan is 1000
years; for residential and office buildings, usually 100 years. Relationship
between function and lifespan can be affected by services, space plan or stuff.
Function also can characterize by building type.
'FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION'
Villa Blanc is a prestigious Roman building built in eclectic style in the late 1800's. It is located in Rome, Italy. Villa
Blanc is the result of renovation in 1896 of a pre-existing building (1848) by
Marquis Lorenzo Lezzani. It functions as a hotel. The villa has a more or less
shape of a cross structure, but irregular. Balcony with stone carving (caryatids),
decorated with poly-chrome ceramic methopes with naturalistic elements. The
ballroom lined one’s side by cast iron columns that include the windows. From
2017, it used as part of university campus of LUISS Business School.
CHICAGO FIRE
Louis
Sullivan think that form ever follows function, this is a law. Architecture is
not written to imitate nature, but in the inevitable structure of the evolution
to be imitated. Besides that, he thinks that ornament is necessary of a
building based of geometric form and natural form.
'FORM FOLLOW FICTION'
Bernard
Tschumi think that there is no fixed connection between form and the event occurred
in the building. Architecture is driven by culture. Before function there are
stories, there is culture, there is fiction. He against the centuries old
architects of the traditional design method.

LUISS Business School |
LUISS Business School established
at 1986. Since 9 January 2017, the school move to new seat, the recently
renovated 19th-century Villa Blanc. The renovation designed by
Massimo Picciotto. During the renovation, they recovering the interior,
exterior and interior spaces, shapes and decorations of villa. It involved the
staircase with the caryatids and balustrade with 41 columns. It was build all
from the ground up, but reuse the old materials from Villa Blanc. This villa is more to adaptive reuse. The form of
the building still remained the same although the function has changed.
In my opinion, LUISS Business
School is more to ‘form follow function’. This is because form cannot change
but function can be changed same like the case study I choose. Nowadays, I think
architects should achieve on both because ‘form follow fiction’ also important
in modern architecture. It gave more imagination for us on fictional buildings.
These buildings not really fiction at all, but the real experiences of the
people who live or using the buildings. Fiction is just another type of
function.
