TECTONICS

In today’s modern era, the role of ornament and architecture brings different perspective to each individual. Architecture ornamentation is anything that beautifies the structure internally as well as externally, for example neck less, or it might be a precious stone, etc. anything that makes us pleasurable while seeing it. Architecture is a dressed up construction while ornamentation add beauty to the structure. Ornamentation can be a part of many decoration. Using horizontal & vertical decorating elements. When it comes to building. In the past it stared as the idea of decorative art, ornament is a decoration used to embellish parts of a building.

Ornament has changed overtime, in a world where technology is taking over to a new place. An ever increasing rate of culture, environmental are gradually lowering down due to globalization. The designing of ornament through the ages have changed and travelled forming different identities.  Ornamentation serves as a pleasure, sense, imagination and feelings as whole mass of the structure not as any of its details.

In todays world ornamentation depends on various things such as technology that is created to combat with environmental factors yet contain some cultural part of the place/region but with minimum expenses. We have to look back in the past when to create a masterpiece it takes lot of effort, time, energy and manpower. But its easy to create a masterpiece since technology took over.

The contemporary case study I choose is ’GRAND CANAL THEATRE’ by Ar. Daniel Libeskind. The idea/concept behind the building is to build a powerful and cultural presence expressed in a dynamic volumes sculpted. This idea composition creates a dynamic urban gathering place. The theatre itself becomes the main façade of a large public piazza.
With their twin façades, glazed atriums and landscape roofs, the two office block offer sustainable state of the art work environments. By designing multistory glazed atriums, the commercial buildings integrate with adjacent retail, cultural and public space components

Ornament in architecture today is defined as elaboration of functionally complete objects for the sake of visual pleasure or cultural significance. Historically, ornament in architecture has been conceptualized as something that is an additive, unnecessary, building component applied to a host surface or an object. In addition to that in today’s era their patterning does not destroy the overall mass of the building and it is simple or repeated pattern that comfortingly adhered to the building. Architecture ornament nowadays is combination of cultural, environmental and as well challenging artistic task for architect. Ornament is a language which architect communicate with a user. We as a user able to identify cultural of a certain place. Ornament often mimics the mother nature directly for example plants/animal.

The conclusion from my view on the role of ornamentation in architecture today is we have to progress with understanding of necessity and desirability balancing both. The ornamentation in modern era is based on the aesthetic purpose combine with technological, cultural, environmental and social values.

“ORNAMENT MUST BE INTEGRATED WITH THE WAY THE BUILDING IS BUILT, AS WELL AS THE WAY IT IS USED” – JOSEPH RYKWERT. ‘ORNAMENT IS NO CRIME’

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
