TECTONICS Lecture Q4.

4. For each of the texts, discuss a major issue with which you most agree and most      disagree; reflect upon why.

DISAGREE:

ORNAMENT=CRIME
Since, ornament is no longer a natural product of our culture, but a symptom of backwards or degeneracy. As there is no longer any organic connection between Ornament and our culture. Ornament is no longer a expression of our culture. The ornament being created now bears no relationship to us nor to any human beings.

 "The form of an object should last that is, we should find it tolerable as long as the object itself last" - Adolf Loos

AGREE:

Joseph Rkywert, declared that ornament is no crime. since, in his point of view ornament  should be understood as a part of architecture. Architecture and ornament is one unity that inherits the refined form pursued by Adolf loos. but simple form should not restrict its future. As a style, purism form modernism rescued 'unnecessary' decorative elements whose purpose is to express beauty. Later ornament defined by modernism emerged known as 'international style'widespread all over the world.

views:

From my personal views, the ornament is still "enrichment of essential structure of a building". thus, use of ornament is steps towards architecture. that fits the architect imagination. nature is everything but culture will fade along with time. therefore ornament is not a crime but an extension of architecture. As long as the ornament roots in the soil of nature it will always have meaning rather than being redundant.

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

 SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
