The figures, patterns, geometric translations, the symbolic, and material connote references and meaning for one who interests with the ornaments.
New architectural style identities
grow from the blend of the performative and aesthetic or efficiently roles that architectural surfaces must,
and can now feasibly assume. Adolf Loos, in his
celebrated piece, Ornament and Crime, called for “the
elimination of ornament from useful objects.” Rather
than demanding elimination and removal, it can be
understood that what Adolf Loos was really calling for
was reinterpretation. From the intelligent re-analysed and reproduce of ornament in contemporary
architecture with the use of parametric design software
the meaning “ornament” has assumed a new definition and
identity.
Vanke Pavilion - Milan Expo 2015 by Daniel Libeskind
The concept of this design was to bring out many aspects of chinese life into the project. The pavilion is a dynamic and fluid structure that reflects the growth and endurance of the Chinese ethnic and citizens. It is a complete blend of internal and external space, which allows for an unexpected encounter between pavilion and its surrounding.
Geometric ceramic panels producing expressive pattern which is resembles skin of dragon, but in the same time its sustainable self cleaning and air purification systems. The 3D surface is coated with a metallic coloration which is changes light and viewpoints shift. At times it will appear as deep crimson and gives the feelings of rich gold appearance, and even at certain angle it gives the sense of pure white shades. Tiles are installed with cladding system that gives parametric rhythmic pattern with mathematical help to create such ornaments as the skin of the pavilion.
In my opinion, if there is a meaning or usefulness of ornamentation applied in buildings there is no label of ornamentation as crime. As Joseph Rykwert stated on philosophical text that “ornament is no crime”,
i disagree with the statement of "unacceptable" construction should be cover with ornaments. The building has its own ornaments or not, they should have true meaning of it. If every designers take consideration of "technology", "culture", "economic" and environment there will be no right or wrong for ornament to apply in contemporary architecture.
