Question 3 (by Chew Min Jin 1001335575)
Regarding concepts of ornament, discuss one major difference and primary commonality regarding Loos’s, Banham’s and Rykwert’s texts.

Adolf Loos, an Austria and Czech architect (1870-1933) had published an article about 'ornament and crime' during 20th century. That time, he made a serious warning: No matter from aesthetics, economy or social culture, ornament is art of crime (criminal behaviour). It may resulting in the fall of human evolution. Actually he is not totally disagree about 'ornament is crime'. He think that ornament with no functional is a waste. So if ornament with functional he actually agree.

In 1957, Reyner Banham, a architectural historian (1922-1988) discussed Loos's article and confirmed Loos's article had influences on art and architecture. He attacked ornament but inside his building's interior still having ornament.

The last article 'ornament is no crime' written by Joseph Rykwert (born in 1926) and he made an opposite assertion. He think that love for beauty is part of human nature. Main purpose of ornament is to attract the appreciator, hope to bring the feeling of beauty and develop the sense of pleasure for self and appreciator.

Primary commonality among them is ornament is an old tradition. Appropriate using ornament is enough and have to depend a person budget and economic. In addition, using ornament in nowadays building is no efficiency because it wasted labor and money.

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
