HONESTY AND DECEPTION

                         HONESTY AND DECEPTION

Discussing of Honesty and Deception of material is one of the dispute topic in architecture today. Honesty of material means that the true material is come to itself, it doesn’t need any pretended cover up in objection to achieve other functional purpose.  Deception means hide of materials, to cover up weakness of the structure exposed. Honesty in architecture today plays an important role that there are few factors that honesty of material actually accelerating the community and defending the environment today. Nowadays, architecture tends to be honesty, where more of adaptive reusing the heritage structure to provide a new meaning to the building. Nonetheless, some of the contemporary architecture still remain deception because of the plaster layer, ornaments and facades.

John Ruskin from the article “The Lamp of Truth”, been introduce “As, whatever is pretend. It is wrong”. This is because he declaimed that architectural deceits are broadly to be considered under three heads.  “First, the suggestion of a mode of structure or support other than true one; Second, the painting of surface to represent some other material than that of which they actually consist. Third; The use of cast or machine-made ornaments of any kinds”. He also declaimed that all cast and machine work is dishonest.

From Viollet-Leduc “originality is impossible apart from truth” theory is more to import new ideals forms with functionality materials to a existing building. He believes that the exterior of the building should equally reflect to the construction of the building.

From Fil Hearn, “Truth to the medium: using Materials” He declaimed to be strongly accepting the new materials to perform various structural tasks.
Ruskin, Violet and Hearn can be conclude with they all agree with truth of materials.

First of all using honesty of material which I call it as raw material can act as practice to preserve the historical building in a way of sustainable. There are lot of well- known Architects using raw material as primary material for projects. One of the well known local Malaysian architect is NG SEK SAN with his works on Sekeping’s project. Most of Sekeping project are renovated are heritage building in to a contemporary resort by using mix used of traditional and new material. Traditional material such as timber, steel and brick are used to construct buildings. Likewise, new material like concrete and glass are used to make structure more efficient and formal.

He also used openings and glasses to interpret the relationship between interior and exterior. With the wide openings for all the sekeping building.  People can have visual connection to each other; while the uses of glass can allow penetration of sunlight into the building to give a better environment condition.

Although, its good to enrich ‘Honesty’ in architecture but it is important to get in touch with ‘deception’ in this epoch. As time flies, lots of new materials had been discovered; like what sir Viollet-le-Duc said, old materials should be replaced with new era materials because the requirements for the new buildings had changed from time to time and introducing of artificial intelligence, so it is not suitable and inconvenient to use traditional materials in constructing modern building.

Deception building have a different way in expression of structure because of combination of machine-made use and hard work for example  use of ornamentation and covering materials. However, we could improve the lifestyle to a better condition. Architect like zaha Hadid she fully utilize the advantages of deception material morality. her projects are characterized by their capability of using material to form dynamic formal qualities of sinuously, curving shapes or crystallized strata. she embraced digital drawing and combination of new advancement of technology of material. Thus she became one of most iconic architect of 20th century.

Difference between honesty and deception in architecture is the relationship between interior and exterior. ‘Honesty’ will be like sekeping serendah which we can have good visual connection with each other. While Deception will be like Beko buildings where they more to emphasis on the façade’s decoration for both interior and exterior

In my opinion, as an Architects cannot only visualize things that normal people see in physical form, but also to be economical, social, and cultural ways. So it is important for us to get to know with both Honesty and Deception as we need to apply for modern building construction that allows us to improve us to produce a brand new architecture in terms of thinking and as well availability of materials and technologies.

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY Regards of simplicity and complexity which we had discussed from the lecture today, I will be discussing about the design project that I had developed during my Year 2 Sem3. In the project, we are required to design a Art Gallery in a specific site which located in Shah Alam. The reasons I choose this specific project is because I find that the layout design and outcome of the building suits well to the ‘Simplicity’ concept. Simplicity ,t he result is a beautiful rhythmic quality. Repetition with a simple expression of materials creates the  architecture's simplicity .  The building basically is a two storey building which blend in with natural and modern element.   From the ground floor , the first thing we can see is  the lobby and the reception area which is located in the middle of the building. As the building is purpose for the people who doing quilting activity , so the lobby is set at a moderate area whi...
